Australian-based work

HMA continues to be involved with a number of projects in Australia and we are pleased to contribute our knowledge of programme design and skill acquisition, to a number of Australian correctional jurisdictions. The following pieces of work highlight our involvement and contributions to the ongoing development of effective interventions across the Tasman.

Making Choices Programme – Queensland Corrections– HMA staff had the great pleasure of partnering with Corrective Services in Queensland in the implementation of the 100 hour Making Choices Programme. One hundred staff have been trained in program facilitation work (10 days) and also programme specific delivery related to the Making Choices Programme itself (10 days).

Alcohol and Other Drug – South Australia Corrections – this 20 session programme designed by HMA has now been piloted by South Australia Corrections. It combines current ideas around effective correctional practice from both an offending and health promotion perspective. HMA trained 15 Psychological Services staff in preparation for delivering this programme.

Domestic Violence Programme – New South Wales Corrections - this programme, based upon a dynamic model of family violence, uses offence mapping to assist participants to understand the different types of abusive behaviour that reinforce each other, how these patterns are predictable, and to identify pathways out of violence. The seven modules covered within the programme are; engagement / safety planning; patterning of abusive behaviour – pathways; working with cognitions & schema; high risk mood states, victim impact & empathy; key relationship skills; and safety planning.

Safe at Home - Tasmanian Corrections - we had the opportunity to train ten probation officers in the offender intervention program for the Safe at Home project during September 2007. The ten-day training programme covered the theoretical models behind the programme, current research and how to deliver the programme content.

Medium Intensity Violence Program - during July 2008 we ran a ten-day training for twenty-nine facilitation staff from various parts of Department of Corrective Services based in Western Australia. This was to prepare staff for delivering a 137 hour intervention program targeting medium risk offenders engaging in violent behaviour.

Relationships Australia - Ken was invited to present 3 x 1-day workshops in Ballarat and Melbourne for Relationships Australia. The focus of this training was on innovative approaches to working with family violence particularly in relation to working with men. He also recently ran a training day for Relationships Australia staff based in Perth/Fremantle, Western Australia.
