About Us |
Being carbon neutralHMA are the only professional human service teachers and practitioners in New Zealand to achive carbon neutral certification through Landcare Research's carboNZeroCertTM programme. At HMA maintaining our position as a good corporate citizen is important to us - maintaining carboNZero certification for a third year is one way to contribute to this aim. To maintain our carboNZero certification, we re-committed to a three-step process of measuring and reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, then offsetting the remaining unavoidable emissions. This meant measuring HMA's GHG emissions, or carbon footprint, and understanding where emissions were coming from. Most of HMA's emissions came from international and domestic air travel. We then had to make a commitment to manage and reduce those emissions. This involved the launching of our online learning site and increasingly offering e-learning methods to reduce face-to-face contact with participants which saves their carbon footprint and ours. The remaining unavoidable emissions were offset through the purchase and cancellation of verified carbon credits from Native Forests Regeneration Projects. An external, independent auditor checked the process before the carboNZero programme small enterprise certification was issued.
