Nev Trainor

Nev is a registered clinical psychologist who worked for the Department of Corrections from 1998 to 2007 before leaving to set up his own practice. Nev held the following positions within the Department in the nine years he was employed:

· Psychologist (Hamilton PS Office)

· IOM Coordinator (PS Head Office)

· Senior Policy Advisor (PS Head Office)

· Principal Psychologist (Violence Prevention Unit [VPU], Rimutaka Prison)

This experience has provided Nev with broad exposure to the workings of the organisation from different perspectives, including as:

· a clinician and group facilitator (at Montgomery House Violence Prevention Programme),

· an analyst and advisor on policy and practice issues across the Psychological Service and also the whole Department (most notably during the implementation of Integrated Offender Management between 2000 and 2002),

· an evaluator and researcher (on non completion of criminogenic programmes by offenders),

· Manager of the Department’s most intensive rehabilitation programme for serious violent offenders at the VPU,

· Chair of the Area Management Committee for Wellington.

Nev also has extensive experience as a supervisor of staff and currently provides supervision to therapists at the VPU and to programme facilitators from Intervention Services.

The time that Nev has spent within the Department has given him a realistic understanding of the challenges and struggles faced by staff on the day to day basis as well as the significant satisfaction that can derive from contributing to pro social change in the community.

Nev continues to have a strong commitment to social justice and remains optimistic that what the Department offers offenders can be of value to them if they choose to take advantage of these opportunities.
